A NEW WAY TO UNSUBSCRIBE

When Edison first launched one-tap unsubscribe, it was a major draw for users. However, as more apps began adding their own versions of this feature, our team realized it needed a revamp. So our team decided to introduce two new features: subscription insights and a timed summary.

For this project, I partnered closely with one of our lead UI/UX designers in drafting copy, mapping the feature’s flow, and conducting research into other apps.

DEEP DIVE

One of Edison Mail’s hallmark features is one-tap unsubscribe, a simple way for users to empty their inbox. However, as this feature became increasingly common amongst different email apps, our team realized that our unsubscribe needed a bit of an update in the form of subscription insights and a timed summary.

Subscription insights provides helpful information into the value that the user’s subscriptions actually offers in an easy to understand scoreboard, while the timed summary reduces notification fatigue by allowing users to schedule multiple email subscriptions to be delivered in a simple digest at a time that works best for them.

I drafted all in-app copy, tweet copy, and helped to map out the user flow.

My role

  • Explained the new summary feature in simple and clean language.

  • Drafted copy for a tweet that users could automatically post from the app.

  • Assisted in mapping out the flow of the first-time user experience.

THE PROCESS

  • I met with our UX designers to map out the best user flow

Key asks

  • Introduce summary in a simple and clean way that encourages usage.

  • Create copy that doesn’t feel invasive, or makes the user feel as if much work is required of them.

ISSUES FACED

  • Initial versions of the subscription deletion suggestion came off a bit too snoopy, and made the user feel as if they needed to do some additional work.

  • We weren’t able to run any A/B tests for the push notification, so the copy we chose would be final.

THE END RESULT

A refreshed version of our Subscriptions page helped users get more use out of our app. Subscription insights shows users an overview of the subscriptions they actually open, and summary allows them to combine a number of their subscriptions to be delivered in one tidy push notification.
